introducing: money safes!

I have two books up in the shop right now that are specifically carved to store your monies. I have personally used one of these since the beginning incarnations of Pommes Frites - back before I was "officially" a business and it took me upwards of 3 or 4 hours to finish carving a book, and am very happy to be offering them to you!

These are a great gift for service industry folk, too!

To the unsuspecting eye, they just make you look like a collector of fine vintage books.

I also listed some flask books and a few others.... check out the shop for repurposed goodness.

sunday night

Sunday night, Tom was working late so I spent a night with an old encyclopedia and an x-acto knife.

It was a children's C Encyclopedia from the 1950s and was full of great images of chincillas, California, and tips on making canoes. These clippings will all be turned into pins (or magnets) and posted in the store soon.

etsy find: mybonnie's custom pet pillows

Alright, stop me if I'm entering crazy cat lady territory here, but how awesome are these custom pillows?

And just to confirm my sane cat lady status, I will show a custom dog pillow too.

They range from $50 - $75, and you can also get TWO pets on ONE pillows. Now if I could only get my cats to cuddle like good little boys...

vintage crochet

My mother sent me a box the other day of some things from my Grandparent's beach house. My Uncle and Aunt have moved into it, so all the great little goodies have been packed up. Long time readers will know which beach house I'm talking about.

One of my favorite things about this house were these great circular crochet pillows in orange and brown. The colors were so '70s, and paired with all the intact '70s furniture and linens in this house, it gave a pretty kitschy effect (not that I didn't love it, but I know I'm alone in this boat.) However, I think they look pretty cute on my retro style couch with the pillows I made out of vintage curtains.

On the back of the couch you can see the granny square afghan I started a year ago. It's finally (almost) finished - enough to put it out! I just have a few more ends to weave in, and a little hole to fix up. Here's the finished product.

nerd alert

I have officially entered a new level of nerd-dom. I bought a label maker.

Now all things in my house that needed to be labeled, and many that didn't, are properly named.

It's the Virgo in me that loves having A Place for Everything, even if everything isn't in it's place.

good mornings

good mornings should always begin like this:

coffee and an awesome diy project. This is just a sneak peak for my next Paper Dolls tutorial.

finally, a usable backyard!

Yesterda, when Tom and I packed the back of my Golf full of five, flat-folding pieces of furniture (and a giant umbrella!) from Ikea, I was filled with a sense of perfection with how seamlessly Ikea fits into our life (and car). They must make these things specifically for petite rides such as my own - I mean really, they feature a bug in some of their ads!

Two hours, seven monkey wrenches, stripped screws, and many explicatives later, I am convinced Ikea must have an agreement with an Anti-Anxiety Pharmaceutical company.

Either way, we have a beautiful patio set and are actually making use of our giant backyard.

this is where I'll be spending my summer, under this umbrella with the little solar power lights:

The set is Kvarno, and the little solar power lanterns are Solig.

In bad news, however, some drunk person stole one of my plants! Granted, it was sitting at the end of our lawn, next to the driveway. However, that was to alert the neighbors, who keep parking us in, as to the boundaries of our driveway, not to alert someone that I didn't want that plant anymore. Because I did! I say they must have been drunk because it's St Patrick's day, it was in broad daylight, and otherwise they are just mean.

scanwich

I found this bizarre little website today, and I totally love it. It's called scanwiches. The whole theory of it is scanner + sandwich = scanwich.

I love sandwiches. Tom and I eat them every day but they come no where near these scanwiches. Ah, deli sandwiches, how I miss thee!

PS If you live in Brooklyn the best sandwich hands down is the Shrek sandwich at Hana Foods on Metropolitan and Union. Fried tofu + hummus + spinach. It sounds easily replicated but do not be fooled. The hummus is amazing (better than Sabra and Cedars combined) and tofu is fried to perfection.

That being said, don't look at this site for too long or you will develop some serious tumbles. (that's tummy rumbles, and yes, I just coined that!)

etsy austin sxsw event!

The members of Team Etsy Austin have been hard at work lately preparing for our events during SXSW. We have a booth set up outside Hill Country Weavers during both weekends (14-15 and 21-22 from noon to 7) where we will be selling Etsy Austin wares and doing demos throughout the day. We'll also be downtown during those times handing out these awesome Etsy Austin swag bags that we've been busy making!

The bags are made out of recycled tee-shirts and are printed with the Etsy Austin logo, then stuffed full of promo items, coupons, and other goodies. Last Saturday there was a bag making party at Beth from Paired Hearts's house. There was a veritable sweatshop going on of Etsy Austin team members sewing, printing, and stuffing for nearly eight hours. I hear it lasted until 2 in the morning! That's dedication. April and I spent about five hours making and finishing Etsy Austin pins for the bags. They are super cute, but my button maker is about to go into retirement! At least my forearm is getting buff. I don't know if that's a good thing.

I didn't bring my camera, but April took some pics for me and I also stole a bunch from the Etsy Austin flickr group.

bags!

on this one you can kinda see the buttons on the bags.

Definitely something to do during SXSW if you're looking for a little break from all the booze and music!
