Austin Flea this Sunday!

This Sunday I will be participating in another Austin Flea event at the Ghost Room! (304 w 4th St) As always, Austin Flea is not only an opportunity to grab a bloody mary and shop craft, but the proceeds will go to a local charity. This time, the Flea will be benefiting Blue Dog Rescue who are also celebrating their 10th birthday and Dogtober Fest.

You can also snap up some locally sourced jam from Confituras, or a super cool succulent, that is pre-planted in a vintage pot from Flour Pots. Be sure to check the Flea website or facebook page for more info on vendors, and events throughout the day!

PS - do you "like" Pommes Frites on Facebook yet? ;)

True Blonde

Today was an accidental Work Lite day, masquerading as a sick day. Tom literally stayed up all night with terrible tooth pain, and had to have an impromptu root canal in the afternoon. I did manage to get a little work in, but more so we spent the day relaxing and watching Netflix, and in the evening we grabbed some of our new favorite type of beer, blonde ale.

We had to pick up this 6-pack from Ska Brewing Company - we were both so drawn to the design. Packaging truly does sell.

Our favorite, though, is Shiner Blonde. Have you ever had a blonde ale? Or more pressing, have you ever bought a beer based on design alone?

I ♥ It: Vintage Airstream Trailers

When I retire, I'd like to travel around the US in a kooky vintage airstream trailer, stopping at campsites here and there, collecting souvenirs and americana ephemera, drinking beers on our "porch", swimming in lakes and rivers as we go, from Montana to Maine.

Although I have my heart set on a silver bullet style, I also love these vintage trailers, which remind me of a pastel ice cream cone.

All photos are from We Heart It... click the individual photos to find more info!

It's no secret.... trailers are hot right now. In Austin, we have a huge food culture based around food trailers, and even a crafty, diy airstream/traveling boutique. One of my favorite indie businesses told me they travel across the country to craft shows and music gigs in their teal and pink trailer. Ah, livin' the dream!

Etsy Finds: Freak Out and Call Mom

Although I do love those ubiquitous Keep Calm and Carry On posters, I also love all the variations they've spawned. A quick etsy search brings up many varieties, including "Keep Calm and Ride On", "Keep Calm and Carry Yarn", "Keep Calm and Eat a Cupcake". However, my favorite variation has got to be this one, from Etsy seller Claire and Me Designs.

Yes, that's much more my style.

Modernist Bike Storage

Chris from Knife and Saw has answered the call for chic bike storage (and display) with this Bike Shelf.

The top is the perfect resting spot for keys, books, plants, bike tools and more. You can find ordering info on the site.

I do love this modernist approach to a bike rack - although I'm also into bikes leaning against walls and hanging from ceilings. It's sort of like a badge of honor.

If you're a bicyclist, what's your answer to bike storage?

Vintage Letterpress Wedding Invitations

I wanted to share these lovely wedding invitations, not only because they are so beautiful, but because they are from the wedding I was recently in! Heather's friend Kenny of Giant Squid Press was able to make these custom letterpress invites.

The front of the invitation shows a vintage pig illustration with butcher cuts. Instead of traditional butcher cut names, they subsituted words that represented different aspects of their relationships - respect, love, honesty, friendship, compassion, attraction. Over the pig is a banner that reads "Heather and James", held in place by two sweet birds - straight of Cinderella, no?

Unfold the invitation to find the rest of the letterpressed work. Their friend used original vintage blocks to create Heather and James' names - which I love, because of the little quirks the age of the blocks brings. On the third flap is a map to Heather's parents house, where they were married only three weeks ago.

My congrats again, to the lovely Heather and James, who just returned from their honeymoon with enormous smiles, an entire suitcase full of Italian wines and as a newly married couple. <3

Etsy Finds: Concrete Dreams

Right now, I'm fawning over these cool pendant necklaces from Etsy seller DrCraze. The pendants are made using colored concrete and bits of crushed glass, and finished with recycled stainless steel or brass.

Black and Blue heart pendant necklace

The jewelry is surprisingly delicate and sweet, despite the fact that it's made with one of the toughest of industrial materials.

This one is made with black concrete and brass

My favorite is the dreamy cloud pendant

I love how some of the necklaces look like rare gemstones! Check out more in their etsy shop.

Holga-fied: Vacation Adventures

I finally took the jump and developed a roll of film from my Holga. It may not seem like a big deal... but I've had this camera for nearly two years! What took me so long?

I looked at the first roll as sort of an experiment - not using any tape on the camera to figure out what the natural light leaks looked like. And, because of a minor mishap when removing the roll from the camera, the light leaks are plentiful towards the end of the roll. Either way, I love the pictures that developed...

Bocce ball on the beach.

My favorite picture from the roll... of my family. From L to R you've got Tom, my Dad, my sister & mom and then my granddad, making a ridiculous moose impression. The best part was, I didn't realize he had did that until I got the negatives. For that picture alone, I immediately ordered digital scans.

This one is probably the leakiest of all the photos I've shared... you can even see the "Kodak" print from the film itself. Nevertheless, I love this picture!

I can't wait to experiment further with Holga-hacks. Have you ever played around with a Holga? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

1/4 of a Century

I lieu of the requisite birthday cake photo, I bring you this photo of a delicious stuffed burger from Your Mom's

Today I turned 25. I am officially in my mid-twenties. May I just say... holy crap! That is all.

Hollow Books on Film: White Collar

There was a great hollow book sighting on my new favorite USA show, White Collar, the other night! I won't go into all the plot details here, but the main character, the ever-so-handsome Neil Caffrey opens this hollow book (looks like a bible) and removes an important key from inside.

White Collar aficionados will know this is not the first hollow book shout out - there was a mention of one a couple episodes ago ("the money is hidden in a hollowed out weapons manual") - although it is the first time one has been shown on screen. Hollow books = a spy's best friend.

I love the raw quality of the edges, and it's pretty cool that the pages have been left loose - although, you'd have to keep it pressed between a few other books to ensure it doesn't fly open and spill your secrets.

Dispatches from the Island

Hello! Remember me? In the hubbub of leaving for vacation, prepping for a wedding, finishing up custom orders and all the million errands that come with it, I forget to check off one thing on my "to do" list: write vacation blogs. Ah, well. It's probably better off that I take a proper vacation and take a break from the internet. Does anyone else find this incredibly difficult?

I'll be back soon with a longer and more substantial post - I have several in the works: sharing pictures from the wedding, including personalized 1" buttons, amazing letterpress invitations, pictures of their diy-ed table tops and of course pictures of the blushing bride; pictures from my Holga of South Carolina (where I'm currently stationed with my family, playing bocce ball on the beach and filling up on shrimp and grits and non-virgin Arnold Palmers - heaven!)

In the meantime, I'll leave you with a few pictures. Heather & James set up a photobooth for the wedding (because not only are they photobooth fanatics, but all of their friends are too) and the pictures from it are amazing. Here's a couple of my favorites... mainly because they perfectly capture the elated spirit throughout the entire event.

Be back soon!
