KLRU Interview

I just realized I never posted this interview! KLRU, Austin's PBS affiliate, interviewed Austin-based artists (including me!! eek!) at Renegade this year about how they got started doing what they're doing, and how you can get inspired to create.

I'm around 2:43 if you finally want to put an actual voice to that blog voice. Two things: 1. No, I'm not naked. I'm wearing a tube dress! 2. I am also on weeks of 4 hrs of sleep, but I manage to make sense. Sort of....???

Basically, my advice for creating is that you can DIY anything, if you really want to. Jam, tablecloths, pottery, etc. Handmade items just have more heart than mass produced ones. And those things you can't DIY yourself? That's why there's etsy!

A lot of the other interview-ees gave advice for people wanting to start their business, but I'm thinking just in terms of making. I would NOT recommend just copying someone else's design for business purposes. However, you can use it as a jumping off point to create something unique. Keep searching for ways to improve an item and give it more life.

Side note: it's funny that I name check Urban Outfitters as a place you can get inspired to DIY, in light of their recent scandal.

It's also a true fact that I cruise the aisles of Target, look at something and say "I could make that" - most typically with sundresses or something. Whatevs. At least I don't do that at a craft fair. Those people are the worst... especially when the maker is within earshot. Not that that happened, or anything.
